Here’s one of the RAAF’s heavy lifters, a Boeing C-17 Globemaster walkaround. The RAAF had been looking at upgrading their lifting capability for some time. With the Army’s acquisition of the M1A1 Abrams main battle tank, it was decided to add an airlift capability for it. Thus C-17s have been ordered and this is the first one delivered. With Australia’s ongoing commitments to both peacekeeping and military actions in our region and around the world, the C-17s will provide a welcome relief to the C-130 Hercules fleet. The C-17 has three times the carrying capacity of the Herc. It can carry an Abrams MBT, a Chinook helo, or up to 5 of the Army’s Bushmaster IMVs. I read somewhere that the C-17 is the world’s third most expensive aircraft, behind the B-2 Spirit and the F-22 Raptor.
